Felicity's take on Worcester - Gaza twinning proposal

07 March 2009

Felicity Norman, Lead MEP Candidate in the West Midlands joined other speakers at a meeting in Worcester on Saturday, to discuss the recent City Council motion to twin Worcester with Gaza City. Also on the platform were Manal Timraz, originally from Gaza, who lost 15 family members during the recent Israeli bombing campaign; Ray Gaston, Methodist Minister; Mark France from Respect; and Sohail Farraz Bob.

Felicity Norman said:

"Worcester City Councillors are to be congratulated for focusing attention on the plight of the people of Gaza, whether or not the twinning goes ahead. It is an interesting idea and would show solidarity with people who, whatever the political situation, are in desperate need of support and assistance. There are many examples of community groups, schools, universities etc. establishing links with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, often sending equipments and materials, such as computers and books, and offering scholarships for students. I would also like to see links made with Israeli groups who are working with Palestinians across the devide. This is a tragic situation which can only be resolved by peaceful negotiation, and by ensuring that neither side is isolated from the rest of the world."
