Greens at Love Music Hate Racism in Stoke-on-Trent

30 May 2009

Green MEP Candidate Chris Williams and candidates from Leek, Stafford and Burton-on-Trent campaigned at the Love Music Hate Racism event today at Stoke City's Britannia Stadium to fight against the BNP and promote the Greens' action on justice and human rights.

The racist and homophobic BNP could gain a seat in the West Midlands region, which would lead to the election.  The Green Party stands in their way.  Currently polling at around 11%, the Green Party is predicted to gain the sixth and final seat in the West Midlands region (1).

Voters were happy to hear of the good work of, for example, the Green Party's Jean Lambert MEP who won an award in 2005 as the top MEP on justice and human rights.

Both in the West Midlands and in the North West, the Green Party has added "Say No to Racism" on the ballot paper so that voters have the option to send a strong message to say no to racism and yes to human rights.

TACTICAL VOTING

With the Green Party predicted to gain the sixth and final seat in the West Midlands (according to this weekend's polls), it means that the Green Party is the key block preventing the BNP gaining a seat here.  Click here to see a video from the North West region on how the voting works at the European election and why voting Green can stop the BNP there.

CELEBRITY SUPPORT

Carole Vincent from Big Brother, promoting the anti-racist message at Love Music Hate Racism, dropped by the Green Party stall to chat with candidates and add her support to the Green Party's work.  Carole is voting Green this year and encouraged passers by to join her in backing the Party at the European elections.

(1) Sunday Telegraph opinion poll, 31 May 2009, suggests the Green Party could win 8 seats.  A Politics Professor at Staffordshire University, speaking on the Politics Show, 31 May, confirmed that the final seat could go to the Green Party in the West Midlands.
